The holidays are here again, and this is the time of year when many of us struggle with our weight.
An easy and effective way to keep the calories away, is to reset your metabolism and put those calories to work for you instead of against you.
The key to resetting your metabolism is eating small frequent meals and snacking on low glycemic foods to keep the body’s furnace (metabolism) burning calories all day long.
Eat the Right Foods
What you eat is critical to revving up your metabolism. High-glycemic foods not only stimulate hunger, but also impede the body’s ability to process and burn calories. Low-glycemic foods break down more slowly so blood sugar levels remain steady, helping you feel fuller, longer.
Stay away from High-Glycemic Foods such as white rice, instant oatmeal, lima beans, baked potatoes, bread, carrots, dried fruit, popcorn, and spaghetti.
Choose more Low-Glycemic Foods such as low-fat cheeses, slow cooked oatmeal, beans and legumes, sweet potatoes, barley, brown rice, apples, grapefruit, kelp, rye bread, fish, chicken, and turkey.
You can enjoy a high-glycemic treat occasionally, but eat a low-glycemic food at the same time to keep blood sugar levels steady. Remember to eat balanced portions of proteins and carbs (mostly veggies) each meal.
Does this mean you don’t need to exercise? No! Exercise helps burn calories and builds muscle. Muscle is metabolically more active than fat. The more muscle you have, the more calories your body burns – even when you are resting.
