The Five Bodies of Yoga

Here in the west we tend to think of Yoga only as a gentle physical exercise, but it is really much more. Yoga is a way to use movement, breathing, and meditation to link the body, mind, and spirit.

In Yoga, we all have five bodies; and when we link them and work them together, we become balanced physically and mentally.

The first body is physical – when we are in pain or are sick, it is difficult to pay attention to the other aspects of our body, so it is very important for us to eat well and exercise.

The second body is energy, also known as Chi or Prana. Breathing is the key to moving energy freely throughout the body.

The third body is Emotions. If we have hate or anger that we cannot let go of, that will affect our physical and mental well-being.

The fourth body is Mental. When we are physical, energetically, and emotionally healthy, our mind is free to pursue higher levels of thought.

The Fifth and final body is Spiritual, also known as Bliss. We use this body to connect with the universal consciousness.

 Ram (Big Daddy) Gudavalli is a Yoga Instructor whose sessions encompass all five of these bodies.The classes are very casual – students can sit on chairs and there are no difficult postures or exertions.
