The Secret to Outsmarting Your Mind

Our minds do not always have our best interests at heart.  Our minds are designed to keep us safe and comfortable, and sometimes “safe and comfortable” is the last thing we want or need to be.

Think about the most exciting or stupendous thing you have ever done in your life – the one thing that you are most proud of.  Were you feeling safe and comfortable?  Or were you scared and unsure of yourself?

Life begins outside our Comfort Zone!

Our Little Voice

We all have a little voice in our heads trying to talk us into taking the easy way out.  Even though we know that eating that donut or drinking that soda is not good for our health, that little voice will rationalize and make bargains with us because it wants us to be safe and comfortable.

“One donut is not going to hurt us.  I’ll just drink that one soda today and promise not to have another one for the rest of the week.  Maybe I will skip my workout today and I will just work out twice as hard tomorrow.”

Do these agreements sound familiar?  Your mind is a master manipulator and it is amazing the things it can talk you into and out of.

The Secret

The secret to outsmarting your mind is to have a BIG INTENTION, a very definite, positive and specific goal that you can use to defeat the rationalizations of your mind.

For instance, if you say to yourself that you won’t drink a soda because it is “bad for my health”, that is a very negative, and wishy- washy intention and you will lose that argument with your mind every time.

Now, imagine that you have a goal to lose 20 pounds by June 1 so that you can look good in your bathing suit.  This is a definite, positive, and specific BIG INTENTION.  You know that if you drink that soda you are putting an unnecessary obstacle in your path that will keep you from your goal. You know that if you say ‘yes’ to that soda, you are saying ‘no’ to something that is very important to you.  This is the secret to outsmarting your mind.

Write it Down

Is there at least the one thing that you would want to change in regards to your health?  Maybe you want to be pain free.  Lose a few pounds.  Get in shape.  Have more energy.

Pick the one that is the most important to you and write it down.  Be specific.  Write down exactly what you want, how you are going to measure it, and why do you want it?  Put it in a place where you will look at it every day, and the next time your little voice is trying to talk you into something that is not in your best interest, you will have the secret to outsmart your mind.
